The Director of Finance and Accounts attached to the office of Governor Dapo Abiodun in Ogun State, Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, was assassinated during a robbery incident. The incident occurred on the NNPC Bridge near Kuto, Abeokuta, as Oyekanmi was returning from the bank where he had withdrawn funds for the state. The robbers reportedly accosted him, shot him, and used a sledgehammer to force open the receptacle containing the money before fleeing the scene. Despite being rushed to the state hospital, Ijaye, Oyekanmi was pronounced dead.
The homemade bullion van used for the withdrawal did not have a police escort at the time of the incident. The police are investigating the case and have requested CCTV footage from the bank to aid in identifying the culprits. Governor Abiodun expressed shock and devastation over the incident, promising to flush out the criminals and ensure justice is served. He called for prayers for Oyekanmi’s family and assured residents that such a calamity would not befall the state again.
