“DSS Clarifies Legal Basis for Detention: Emefiele, Bawa, Nnamdi Kanu Cases Within Legal Boundaries

The Department of State Services (DSS) has provided clarity on the detention of prominent individuals in Nigeria, asserting that the actions taken are in accordance with court orders and legal procedures.

Amid concerns about adherence to legal protocols, the DSS highlighted that the suspension of Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, along with the detainment of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and Abdulrasheed Bawa, the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), are all carried out within legal parameters.

Through an opinion piece titled ‘DSS And Accusations Of Disobedience To Court Orders – Setting The Records Right,’ Peter Afunanya, the DSS Public Relations Officer, detailed the chronology of events and legal measures that support these actions.

The focal point of controversy lies in the case of Emefiele. The DSS clarified that its adherence to court orders is evident in the sequence of events that led to Emefiele’s arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. The agency underlined its dedication to the rule of law while navigating the complexities of the situation.

While acknowledging criticisms leveled against its approach to various cases, the DSS emphasized its consistent commitment to legal guidelines and its deep respect for the judicial system. The agency urged critics to base their judgments on facts and substantive analysis rather than baseless allegations.

The opinion piece emphasized the DSS’s pivotal role in upholding democracy in Nigeria and stressed the significance of maintaining the rule of law while respecting the judicial process. The agency underscored the importance of collaborative support from stakeholders to bolster the nation’s legal framework and foster transparency.

In conclusion, the DSS reiterated its unswerving dedication to upholding the law, adhering to court orders, and preserving the integrity of the legal system. It called on critics to engage in informed discourse and avoid distorting the agency’s actions.”
