The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, disclosed on Tuesday that he has not received his six-month allowance due to the ongoing tension between him and his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki. Speaking at the opening of the Correspondents Office in Benin, Shaibu revealed that he has been managing his office and other activities through contributions from friends and goodwill.
Acknowledging the strained relationship with Governor Obaseki, Shaibu stated, “You know there is tension between the governor and I. And for six months, there has been no allocation to my office. So, whatever I am doing is contributions from friends and my goodwill; and I am still standing very strong.”
Describing himself as an ambassador of the press, Shaibu expressed gratitude to journalists for their role in saving him from the clutches of a dictator during the regime of the late Head of State, Gen. Sanni Abacha. He highlighted the significance of investigative reporting in his life and emphasized his commitment to supporting the media.

“I am your ambassador anywhere I am. This is not because of politics, but because of what you have done to save my life in the cause of doing your work,” Shaibu declared, adding that he would attend press events despite difficulties as a gesture of appreciation and encouragement.
Shaibu outlined his dedication to ensuring good governance in Edo State, placing it at the forefront of his agenda. He expressed his determination to strengthen institutions within the state, emphasizing the importance of having an egalitarian society and robust institutions to address societal challenges.
“Institution does not know the rich, strong or the poor, it takes care of all strata of life. That is what I stand for, that is why I joined politics,” Shaibu stated, emphasizing his sacrifices for the betterment of Edo State. He announced plans for a world press conference in the coming weeks to present his stewardship as deputy governor from 2016 to date, intending to showcase the sacrifices made in service to the state.
