In a bold declaration, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has expressed confidence in his victory in the upcoming governorship election in the state. He stated that he is determined to defeat the preferred candidate of the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki.
Shaibu made this assertion during a TVC programme on Monday evening, reaffirming his commitment to securing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in the forthcoming party primaries. The deputy governor’s announcement was followed by the inauguration of his campaign office in Benin City, the state capital, drawing a substantial crowd of party supporters.
In his remarks, Shaibu emphasized his connection with the people of Edo, asserting that he represents the desire of the populace for a candidate rooted in the state. He expressed his belief that Edo residents prefer a candidate from their own ranks rather than an imported choice.
Shaibu addressed the dynamics between him and Governor Obaseki, citing differences in their management styles. He highlighted certain individuals with interests in governance coming between them but emphasized his commitment to managing the situation in his own way.
The governorship hopeful also spoke about facing intimidation and oppression but affirmed his resilience by stating that he is “pressed, but not distressed.” The upcoming political contest in Edo State is now set to witness a keen competition within the PDP, adding further intrigue to the unfolding political landscape in the region.
