Edo guber: PDP produces two candidates in parallel primaries, creates confusion

The Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, selected two candidates on Thursday to run for Edo State’s governorship on September 21, 2024.

According to the media, Asue Ighodalo and Philip Shaibu, the state’s deputy governor at the moment, are the two contenders.
In simultaneous governorship primaries held in Benin City, the two contenders emerged.
In a different primary held at the Samuel Ogbemudia, Ighodalo prevailed with 577 votes, while Shaibu was named the winner with 300 votes.

594 delegates were elected to participate in the governorship primary, and 585 delegates were accredited to vote, according to the governorship primary committee, which is chaired by Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.

Lawal, the chairman of the committee primary and chief returner for the governorship primary, announced the final vote totals. He revealed that Asue Ighodalo received 577 votes, while Philip Shaibu, his closest competitor, received just one vote.

Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and Omosede Igbinedion withdrew from the race, while Anselm Ojezua, Osaro Onaiwu, Felix Akhabue, Martins Uhomoibhi, Hadizat Umoru, and Arthur Esele received zero votes, according to him.

Six votes, he declared, were invalid.

Ighodalo, the party’s nominee for governor, pledged in his acceptance address to lead Edo State farther than Governor Godwin Obaseki would go.

In addition, if Ighodalo wins the September 21 governorship race, he pledged to include both young and old in the development of the state.

He acknowledged that no man is God, but he nevertheless urged fellow candidates, party members, and Edo State residents to support him in his bid to become the state’s governor.

Ighodalo, who asserted that no one is flawless, added that he would put in endless effort to correct the flaws of others for the benefit of the state.
