On Tuesday, the Ogun State House of Assembly swore in Oludaisi Elemide as its new Speaker.
Elemide, who represents the Odeda State Constituency, is in his third term in the Assembly.
Elemide emerged following the impeachment of Assembly Speaker Olakunle Oluomo.
According to reports, as of Tuesday morning, 25 of the 26 members of the state assembly had signed Oluomo’s impeachment notice on claims of highhandedness, lack of concentration, and money embezzlement, among other things.
At the plenary, the Assembly ratified Oluomo’s impeachment, with 22 members voting in favor.
Lamidi added that the committee made it clear to the former Speaker that it was not on a witch-hunting expedition, but rather seeking a fair hearing on the charges against him.
According to Lamidi, “The speaker stated that some committee members do not have the right to be members of the committee to investigate him because they were among the 18 members who originally signed the impeachment notice.”
“After observing that the committee denied his plea, he walked out to avoid answering any additional questions from the committee.
“The committee observed that the speaker’s attitude demonstrates a lack of respect for the committee and, by extension, the House of Assembly.
“His attitude is a clear admittance of the allegations contained in the impeachment notice served on him which includes financial impropriety, high handedness and lack of focus among others,” the attorney general stated.
Lamidi, on the other hand, claimed that the committee found him guilty of all allegations leveled against him and therefore recommended that he be impeached.
He later moved to adopt the report, which was seconded by Oluseun Adesanya, representing the Ijebu North East State Constituency.
The Deputy Speaker threw the resolution back to the House, and the 22 members present voted to remove Oluomo as speaker by a majority vote.
“With the majority vote of 22 members, I hereby confirm that Oluomo stands impeached and removed as the speaker of the Ogun House of Assembly,” he said in a statement. the
In response to the development, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun commended the new Speaker and other members for ensuring a peaceful transition.
The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said as she met 19 House members who followed the new speaker on a courtesy call to her office.
He praised the smooth process by which they chose the new speaker, underlining that parliamentarians have the right to choose who will lead them in a democracy.
“You completed the process in an exceptional manner. our is not the first time in our country that members of a particular legislature have chosen to replace their leader.”
He emphasized that the executive branch will continue to carefully adhere to the notion of separation of powers and the rule of law in its interactions with the House of Assembly.
