Emefiele threatens Akpabio N25bn lawsuit over alleged defamation a

Godwin Emefiele, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has vowed to sue Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Nigerian Senate, for purported defamation through his legal team.

According to his attorneys, if the Senate President doesn’t apologize, Emefiele would demand N25 billion in damages.

This was stated in a letter to Senator Akpabio on Emefiele’s brief and instructions, signed by his principal attorney, Matthew Burkaa, SAN.
Emefiele is reacting to a widely shared statement made by the Senate President in a video that Channels Television aired last weekend. Emefiele claims the speech is inaccurate, skewed, and obviously intended to denigrate his character.

We don’t know what criminal to charge Emefiele with, Akpabio recently stated.

Many individuals are unaware of the extent of our financial difficulties and debt. President Obama once said, “You can’t know Washington until you visit Washington. By the time we arrived to assess the dire situation of the nation’s economy, we had no idea what to charge the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, let alone whether to charge him for placing foam on the or to impose fees on him for unlawfully possessing firearms or for printing notes without receiving payment.

I have no idea what we will accuse him of. However, I am aware that there is hunger in the world today as a result of the actions they made, stated Akpabio.

Emefiele claimed in a letter to the Senate President that Akpabio had implied in his statement that “the policies of the previous administration are the cause of the entire hardship in Nigeria today.”

The statement further stated that Emefiele was characterized as “A serial offender whose action is responsible for all the hardship experienced by Nigerians today.”

“Someone who has committed so many crimes that it is difficult for the government to decide which ones to charge him with.”

He said that Akpabio, the previous head of CBN, had been charged and was presently defending himself in court, accusing him of subjudice. He expressed concern that Akpabio, as the leader of the legislature, should have been aware that his remarks compromised the independence and credibility of the judiciary.

You also know that not a single policy was implemented by Our Client without the President’s and/or the Federal Executive Council’s, of which you were an important and influential member, permission, order, or authorization.
“Our client has directed us to write to your good offices and demand the immediate retraction of Your comment, which has gone viral, in light of the aforementioned and without getting into the details of the current legal situation that is pending in court.

“Our Client has been subjected to great pain and embarrassment as a result of these baseless and false allegations, which also defame his character. The statement’s falsity has caused unsuspecting members of the Society to view him with less respect, which has further damaged his reputation.”

“Therefore, we have Our Client’s additional directive to demand that you issue an unconditional written apology that is published and distributed through the same channel that you used to disparage his character, as well as the payment of N25,000,000,000 as just compensation for the deliberate and unjustifiable destruction of his hard-earned reputation.

If you are unable, unwilling, or neglect to comply with this lawful demand, our client will be free to pursue any relevant legal remedies under the Federal Republic of Nigerian laws.

Part of the letter said, “Whilst anticipating your compliance with the above, kindly accept the assurances of our best regards.”
