A recent explosion on the Trans-Niger Delta Pipeline in Bodo, Rivers State, was caused by equipment failure, not politics, says environmental activist Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface. He dismissed speculation linking the incident to the region’s political crisis, urging a focus on the aging infrastructure.
Fyneface explained that the pipelines, over 60 years old, are deteriorating due to poor maintenance, leading to frequent failures. He warned that more explosions and oil spills are likely as multinational oil firms hand over these facilities to local companies lacking the resources to maintain them.
The activist called for an urgent investigation by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to confirm the cause and prevent future disasters. He stressed that without proper action, pipeline failures will continue to harm the environment and communities.
