“Experts Urge Government: Take Action to Prevent Diphtheria Spread”

Public health specialists are emphasizing the critical role of the Federal Government and its agencies in implementing measures to contain the spread of diphtheria.

Prof. Osaro Ekhaise, a respected figure in Environmental and Public Health Microbiology at the University of Benin, stressed the importance of regulatory measures and good hygiene practices. He highlighted the need for public health institutions to enforce guidelines that prevent the transmission of infection. Ekhaise also suggested an awareness campaign, particularly targeting individuals in food processing and butchery businesses, to educate them on safe practices.

Ekhaise noted, “While we have sound policies in our society, the real challenge lies in implementation. Public places and restaurants where food is purchased often lack clear regulations to ensure compliance with public health standards. Our Ministry of Health and related bodies need to address this issue.”

He further explained the necessity for measures to prevent the spread of contaminated food. The quality of facilities, as well as equipment used in food preparation, requires monitoring. He proposed town hall meetings to raise awareness and educate the public on safety measures. Moreover, Ekhaise emphasized training and supervision for food vendors and preparers to ensure adherence to proper practices.

Similarly, Prof. Best Ordinioha, a Community Medicine and Public Health expert from the University of Port Harcourt, highlighted vaccination as a highly effective preventive strategy against diphtheria.

The call for immediate action underscores the urgency of curbing the spread of diphtheria and safeguarding public health.
