In a shocking turn of events, an explosion rattled the Rivers State House of Assembly complex on Sunday night, casting a shadow over the political landscape in the region. The incident occurred at approximately 9:25 pm and is believed to be linked to alleged efforts by some lawmakers to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
According to eyewitness accounts, unidentified arsonists hurled an explosive device into the assembly complex, igniting a destructive fire within the building. While attempts to reach Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, proved futile, a senior police officer anonymously confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
The explosion resulted in significant damage to property within the chamber, raising concerns about the extent of the destruction. The senior police officer, acknowledging the politically charged nature of the situation, declared, “Yes, it is true. The fire occurred around 9:30 pm or so. But as we speak, it (the fire) has been put out by firefighters who arrived at the scene just in time. I think it has to do with politics.”
Further investigations have uncovered a potentially orchestrated attempt by certain state legislators to initiate the impeachment of the House leader, Eddison Ehie, as a prelude to Governor Fubara’s removal from office. Eddison Ehie has been accused of obstructing efforts aimed at unseating Fubara, leading to heightened tensions within the political landscape.
As of our reporter’s visit to the Assembly around 10:30 pm, the premises had been cordoned off by the police and various security agencies. Approximately 17 security trucks and an Armoured Personnel Carrier were stationed at the entrance and surrounding areas, reflecting the deep-seated tensions and security concerns that have enveloped the Rivers State House of Assembly complex.
