A Kano resident, Bulama Abdulrahman, has been sentenced to seven years in prison without the option of a fine for impersonating an auctioneer authorized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Abdulrahman defrauded his victims of ₦35 million by falsely claiming he had the authority to sell forfeited properties on behalf of the Commission.
Justice Nasiru Saminu of the Kano State High Court found him guilty of obtaining money under false pretenses. The court also ordered him to refund the full amount to his victims, with a further seven-year prison term if he fails to comply. Despite pleading not guilty, overwhelming evidence led to his conviction.
Abdulrahman, a repeat offender previously convicted for similar fraud in 2021, had posed as an EFCC-approved auctioneer, deceiving buyers into paying for non-existent properties. His latest scam involved a fake sale of a truck and an uncompleted building. With this conviction, the EFCC continues its crackdown on financial fraud in Nigeria.
