A family member claims that a guy who took his uncle’s body to the post office in a horrifying attempt to collect his pension should be given the “benefit of the doubt.”
According to reports, Declan Haughney’s attempt to recover Peadar Doyle’s €246 (£211) payment on January 21 last year resulted in police being summoned and the 66-year-old being declared dead on the premises. He was released from prison last Friday, just one week after being sentenced to two years in prison with six months suspended in Carlow, Ireland, for attempted deception.
The 41-year-old was freed due to time served and remission, and his extended family is thought to be welcoming him back into the fold. Haughney, who has 55 previous convictions, and his friend Gareth Coakley carried Peadar Doyle to Hosey’s post office, Carlow Circuit Criminal Court heard last week.
