Family of man slain by Rivers police officer seek justice

Alafuro Peterside, a father of three, was buried after being shot dead by a police officer inside a famous bar on Stadium Road in Port Harcourt.

On Friday, the late engineer was laid to rest in a private cemetery in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

During a brief sermon delivered at his cemetery, tears flowed freely from his family and a slew of sympathisers, while many who wore black clothes wore melancholy expressions and fled the place immediately after he was interred.
After families, friends, and sympathisers paid their respects, a burial reception for the late Peterside was given at the Port Harcourt Club.

Reporters recalled that the murder of 42-year-old Peterside in the sight of his wife and children in early August of this year triggered a public outcry, with several groups, including the Ijaw Youths Congress, demanding justice.

In addition, while denouncing the occurrence, the Chairman of the Rivers State Civil Society Organisation, Enefaa Geirgewill, encouraged the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation rather than brushing the situation under the rug.
Georgewill also demanded that the police identify and prosecute the suspected murderer.

The Rivers State Police Command has yet to identify the officer who shot the late Peterside, but the Commissioner of Police has stated that the suspect has been charged in court.

At the funeral, the deceased’s younger sister, Josephine Peterside, called for swift justice in the upcoming trial.
“It is shocking that my brother’s life was taken by a trigger-happy police officer,” she said. I’m pleading with the government and the police to grant us justice because this soul will not go quietly.
“You can tell his children are little. The wife is quite young. Nobody should claim that it is a strategic bullet or anything. That is why we are pleading with the government to provide us with justice.”
