The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to forge a partnership with the Republic of Italy focusing on sustainable city development, tourism, and agricultural initiatives. This announcement came during a visit by the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Stefano Leo, to Minister Wike’s office in Abuja on Friday.
Minister Wike expressed his intention to personally meet with Ambassador Leo to explore areas of mutual benefit for both Nigeria and Italy. He highlighted the development of Abuja as a sustainable city as a key area of interest, along with the promotion of tourism and agricultural development.
“Abuja boasts a favorable landscape for agricultural and tourism development,” Minister Wike remarked during the meeting.
Addressing recent developments, including the publication of names of embassies and commissions with outstanding ground rent payments, Minister Wike clarified that this action was not targeted at any specific entity but was aimed at enhancing Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the betterment of the city. He assured that the increased IGR would be channeled into the city’s development.
Furthermore, Minister Wike assured Ambassador Leo that the FCT Administration would create a conducive environment for embassies, commissions, and businesses to thrive.
Ambassador Leo conveyed his congratulations to Minister Wike and expressed optimism regarding their cooperation. He recalled his visit to Rivers in 2022 and commended Minister Wike’s leadership. Ambassador Leo stated that Italy, a leader in the field of tourism, was eager to support sustainable city development and green city initiatives. He pledged his support and interest in strengthening collaboration with Nigeria in these areas.
“It will be a pleasure to follow your ideas and work closely to strengthen our cooperation,” Ambassador Leo affirmed.
This partnership between the Federal Capital Territory and Italy holds the promise of fostering sustainable urban development, boosting tourism, and advancing agricultural initiatives in Abuja and Nigeria as a whole.
