Fernandes Admits Players Share Blame for Ten Hag’s Departure

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has expressed regret over the departure of former manager Eric ten Hag.

He acknowledged that the players, including himself, shared responsibility for the teams underwhelming performances.

Fernandes, who scored his first goal of the season with a second-half penalty to give United a lead against Chelsea, admitted to feeling the weight of their struggles more than most.

“It is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes. You have to take some of the blame on yourself because it is the team that is not doing so well and it is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players.

“I spoke to the manager and apologised. We are not scoring goals and I feel responsible. I normally score many goals but I always give 100% and he is aware of that,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.

Despite guiding United to an FA Cup victory over Manchester City, Ten Hag’s tenure ended following a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season, which included a poor eighth-place finish in the Premier League last year.

After Ten Hag’s dismissal, Ruud Van Nistelrooy stepped in as interim manager, while Porto’s Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the permanent successor, with Van Nistelrooy overseeing the squad until the November international break.
