FG Raises Junior Lecturers’ Salaries by 25%, Keeps 35% for Professors and Others

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a salary increment for academic and non-academic staff of all its tertiary institutions across the country. The percentage increment for junior staff of tertiary institutions has been raised from 23.5% (which was reviewed last year) to 25%. The arrears of this increment from January 2023 will also be paid.

The decision to approve this increment comes after the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, wrote to the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission (NSIWC) to demand the status of the collective. The NSIWC confirmed the increase in a letter addressed to the Minister of Education and issued a circular to relevant government bodies.

For polytechnic lecturers, junior lecturers will receive a 25% increment, while chief lecturers and professors will benefit from a 35% increment. Similarly, academic and non-academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education will also see an increase in their salaries.

This salary increment is expected to address some of the long-standing issues and demands of staff in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. However, it remains to be seen if this will fully address the concerns of academic and non-academic staff who have previously embarked on strikes and protests over issues related to their welfare and working conditions.
