Former APGA Chairman Calls for INEC Chairman’s Resignation

Chekwas Okorie, the former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has urged Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to resign.

Okorie highlighted that Yakubu was found guilty of contempt of court for failing to recognize Edozie Njoku as the current National Chairman of APGA, despite a Supreme Court ruling.

The Supreme Court declared Njoku as the authentic National Chairman, but INEC reportedly did not comply with this order.

Speaking to reporters at the Court of Appeal, where he and other party members submitted a petition, Okorie stated, “In a sane country, Mahmood Yakubu would not remain as the presiding officer of the highest democratic institution after being found guilty of contempt.”

Okorie emphasized that the Court of Appeal’s decision to delay sentencing does not change the fact that Yakubu was found guilty. He called Yakubu’s continued tenure an embarrassment and scandalous for Nigeria’s highest democratic institution.
