Former Ondo Lawmakers Dispute Deputy Governor’s Impeachment

Former members of the Ondo State House of Assembly, under the Concerned All Progressives Congress’ Ex-Lawmakers in Ondo State, have criticized the ongoing impeachment process against the deputy governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa. They believe that the State Assembly’s focus on impeachment is premature and should not take precedence over other pressing issues facing the state.

In a statement delivered in Akure, a former lawmaker, Mr. Abiodun Jerome, representing others, advised the State Assembly to follow due process and warned against causing chaos in the state. The former lawmakers urged the current assembly members to understand the importance of separation of powers and recognize that their actions are being watched by the public and the world.

Jerome emphasized, “Our intention is purely advisory. May we remind you, dear Honourables (lawmakers) that Chapter 5 Part 2 and Section 90 to 129 of the Nigerian Constitution is very clear on the establishment of the House of Assembly and its functions.”

The former lawmakers pointed out that the current Assembly is less than four months old and expressed concern that impeachment proceedings have become a priority despite numerous critical challenges facing the state. They urged the Assembly to discontinue the impeachment process and not set a bad precedent.

In response, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Mr. Olamide Olamiju, defended the Assembly’s actions, stating that they were fulfilling their constitutional duty to hold elected public officers accountable. He explained that the legislative process regarding the impeachment would continue.

The ongoing impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor have stirred controversy in the state, with different parties expressing their views on the matter.
