“Former RCCG Pastor Installed as Soun, Begins Seven-Day Rites”

Ghandi Laoye, a former pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has been installed as the new Soun of Ogbomoso in Oyo State, Nigeria. Laoye arrived in Ogbomoso via a private chopper and will spend seven days in seclusion before receiving the staff of office from the state government.

The Soun of Ogbomoso stool became vacant after the passing of Oba Jimoh Oyewumi in December 2021. Laoye stepped down as a pastor on the instruction of the RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, prior to his installation.

However, there has been opposition from some members of the family who claim that the process that produced Laoye was inconclusive and contravened native law and custom. They argue that a minority committee performed the task instead of the entire family. The matter is currently before the court, with a judgment scheduled for October 3.

Despite the legal challenge, the kingmakers proceeded with the installation of Ghandi Laoye as the new Soun of Ogbomoso. He was proclaimed His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Laoye, Orumogege III.

The installation of a new monarch is a significant event in traditional Yoruba culture and carries with it various responsibilities and roles within the community.
