Professor Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Buhari, has urged Nigeria to further decentralize power between federal and state governments. He argued that centralizing authority in Abuja is a legacy of prolonged military rule, which weakened state and local governance.
Speaking on Channels Television, Gambari emphasized the importance of empowering states to manage key sectors like education and agriculture, reducing reliance on the federal government. He also highlighted the need to strengthen local governments, advocating for autonomy and improved capacity to ensure effective use of funds.
Gambari expressed optimism about Nigeria’s role in Africa, stressing that as a future global population leader, Nigeria must build a governance system that supports sustainable growth.
