Germany and Scotland Make History in EURO 2024 Opener

Germany, the Euro 2024 hosts made a stunning start by thrashing Steve Clarke’s team in Munich during the opening match.

Germany and Scotland made European Championship history at the Allianz Arena when Julian Nagelsmann’s side crushed Scotland 5-1. Florian Wirtz initiated the scoring at 10 minutes, which was followed by goals from Jamal Musiala and a Kai Havertz penalty, putting the EURO 2024 hosts 3-0 ahead at half time.

After halftime, Nagelsmann’s team netted two more goals, with Antonio Rudiger’s own goal occurring between strikes from Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can.

According to Opta, Friday’s opening match was the very first in competition history to record a sending-off, a penalty scored, and an own goal.

Ryan Porteous was sent off after Clement Turpin’s pitch-side review of his foul on Ilkay Gundogan in Scotland’s penalty area, leading to Havertz’s successful penalty.

Rudiger accidentally scored an own goal after an Andrew Robertson free-kick, with the ball deflecting off Fullkrug and Scott McKenna before Rudiger headed it past Manuel Neuer.

Germany will face Hungary on June 19 and Switzerland on June 23. Scotland’s next Group A match is against Switzerland next Wednesday.
