Global Surge in Protests: A 2024 Overview

As the second half of 2024 unfolds, protests are surging across the globe, moving beyond their traditional bases in Africa to impact Europe and Asia. This wave of unrest is driven by diverse issues including economic hardships, immigration policies, and electoral dissatisfaction.

Kenya: Tax Protests Turn Violent

In Kenya, protests ignited by proposed tax hikes on essential goods have escalated into a broader movement demanding more accountable governance and President William Ruto’s resignation. What began as peaceful demonstrations turned violent, resulting in over 20 deaths and significant damage to public property. Despite the retraction of the finance bill, President Ruto remains in office as protests continue.

Nigeria: Economic Hardship and Governance Issues

Nigeria has seen widespread protests since August 1, organized by the “Take It Back” Movement and other groups. The demonstrations, driven by the rising cost of living and food prices, call for an end to anti-people policies, a reversal of fuel price increases, a minimum wage raise to ₦300,000, and electoral and security reforms. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s calls for protesters to cease actions due to Russian flags being waved, the protests persist.

India: Labor and Agricultural Discontent

India is experiencing unrest with sit-in protests planned by the Indian National Trade Union Congress to address state labor policies. The movement, which began in February over farmers’ demands for fair crop prices, continues with support from various sectors. Protesters seek higher crop prices from the Ministry of Agriculture to improve their livelihoods.

Bangladesh: Quota System and Political Turmoil

Bangladesh is facing severe unrest, with nearly 100 deaths linked to protests against the government’s job quota system. Initially sparked by the ‘Students Against Discrimination’ group, the unrest has expanded to include calls for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Amid the turmoil, the army chief plans to establish an interim government, while Hasina has reportedly fled the capital.

Venezuela: Electoral Disputes and Opposition Rallies

In Venezuela, protesters accuse President Nicolás Maduro of election fraud and suppression of opposition supporters. Demonstrations in Caracas support opposition leader María Corina Machado, who claims her candidate won the disputed July 28 election. Despite government crackdowns, the protests continue with significant arrests and reported deaths.

United Kingdom: Anti-Immigration Protests

The UK has seen anti-immigration protests fueled by misinformation following a knife attack in Southport that killed three girls. Protests have spread across cities like Liverpool, Bristol, and Manchester, resulting in arrests and vandalism. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned the violence and promised legal action against perpetrators, as some protesters demand immigrant repatriation.
