Gov. Taraba laments 100 boat accident victims and requests investigation

The 100 passengers in the boat disaster in the River Benue on Saturday were believed to be dead, and Dr. Agbu Kefas, the governor of Taraba State, expressed his condolences to their families on Monday.

The governor requested a comprehensive inquiry to determine the reason of the boat tragedy in a condolence statement written by Emmanuel Bello, his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication.

On Sunday, the police announced that a search and rescue operation was still on and that the bodies of three children had been found.

The victims were returning to Karim Lamido Local Government from the Mayo-Renowo fish market on Saturday when the boat overturned in the River Benue, according to Usman Abdullahi, the Police Public Relations Officer for Taraba State.

A preliminary report indicates that none of the people in the boat survived the tragedy. Three bodies have been found related to the incident thus far, according to Abdullahi.

The boat carrying a large number of passengers departed Mayoreneyo local jetty on Saturday and was headed to Binnari town in the Karim Lamido LGA, but capsized in the River Benue midway, according to Alhaji Dalhatu Kawu, the caretaker chairman of Ardo-Kola LGA.

It was discovered that neither the unfortunate boat’s occupants nor its operator were on life jackets.
