Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has clashed with the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, over the governor’s recent ban on the activities of Okaigheles (youth leaders) in the Edo South senatorial district. Obaseki announced the ban on June 3 as part of his efforts to combat cult-related violence, which has claimed over 150 lives since January 2024.
The ban affects seven local government areas: Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, Ovia Northeast, Ovia Southwest, Orhionmwon, and Uhunmwonde. Obaseki emphasized that this measure is crucial for tackling the growing issue of cultism in the state. However, the palace of the Oba of Benin has called for peace, stating that Okaigheles play a traditional role in community administration and cannot be banned by fiat.
In response to the ban, the Obazelu of Benin, Osaro Idah, assured protesting Okaigheles that the palace would engage in dialogue with the state government. Idah emphasized that while the traditional institution supports maintaining order, it will not shield those involved in criminal activities. Youth leaders and village heads, represented by Comrade Rowland Ogbomo, urged the Oba to intervene, asserting that Okaigheles are integral to upholding law and order based on Benin’s customs.
