A shocking incident unfolded in the Dawaki community of Abuja as gunmen, clad in military attire, abducted at least 20 people in a daring raid. Witnesses recounted the harrowing ordeal, describing the attackers as bandits, armed robbers, and even terrorists.
The assault occurred around 7:30 pm on Sunday, with the gunmen wielding various weapons and operating until about 8:30 pm. Dawaki, a bustling area along the Abuja-Kubwa Expressway, is home to thousands of workers and sits directly opposite Gwarinpa Estate, Nigeria’s largest organized settlement.
Just days prior, kidnappers targeted Shagari Quarters in Dei-Dei, a mere five kilometers away, where they abducted a Customs officer’s family, further heightening security concerns in the vicinity.
Residents recounted the chilling moments as the gunmen struck, with many escaping narrowly. Hosea Christopher detailed the abduction of 17 people, with five managing to flee during transit. Despite a confrontation with DSS operatives near the Usuma Dam forest, the assailants evaded capture.
Survivor Abel James recalled the attackers’ sinister demeanor, noting their uniforms and face masks. He described seeking refuge in a nearby construction site as gunfire echoed through the community. Two gunmen were reportedly apprehended by security forces near the Usuma Dam, marking a partial victory amidst the chaos.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, confirmed the incident and led a rescue operation in the Ushafa-Shishipe area, resulting in a fierce gun battle with the assailants. Several abducted victims were rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment, underscoring the swift response of law enforcement amid the crisis.
