Residents affected by the recent demolition of houses in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State are expressing frustration in securing shelter for their families. The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) initiated the demolition, targeting 677 houses and partially demolishing 744 for alleged violations of housing and development regulations.
The affected structures, predominantly residential, included some commercial properties like hotels and pharmaceutical companies. Homeowners highlighted the short eviction notice, leaving them unprepared for the sudden demolition, and preventing the proper removal of belongings.
One affected homeowner, Paul Michaels, described the situation as a double tragedy, expressing disbelief at going from a proud homeowner to struggling for shelter. Another resident, Philip, moved his family to a hotel temporarily, facing challenges in finding suitable accommodation promptly.
Some victims have resorted to sleeping in their places of work due to the urgency of the situation. The short notice has prompted individuals to consider relocating to their hometowns.
Responding to concerns, the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, denied claims that the demolition was targeting a specific ethnic group. He emphasized that the demolished buildings lacked proper approval from the state’s regulatory agencies and were hastily constructed during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
