Hollywood icon, Sir Michael Gambon, has peacefully passed away in a hospital at the age of 82, as confirmed by his family. He is renowned for his iconic portrayal of Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore in several Harry Potter films.
Sir Michael embarked on his illustrious acting journey over six decades ago and was among the founding members of the Royal National Theatre, sharing the stage with Laurence Olivier. His career encompassed diverse roles, including his portrayal of French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV series Maigret and appearances in the BBC series The Singing Detective.
A statement on behalf of Lady Gambon and their son Fergus Gambon conveyed the sorrowful news: “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”
Throughout his remarkable career, Sir Michael earned acclaim and accolades, securing Oliviers, BAFTAs, and Emmys. He made his acting debut in 1962 with a production of Othello in Dublin, swiftly joining the National Theatre in London and gracing stages across the UK, New York, and Germany.
His cinematic debut was also in Othello in 1965, followed by roles in beloved movies like Gosford Park, Sleepy Hollow, and the Paddington films. However, it was his portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, succeeding Richard Harris, that introduced him to a new generation of viewers and solidified his status as a legendary figure in modern cinema.
