The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has praised the dedication and diligence of police officers, military personnel, and other security operatives in ensuring the smooth conduct of elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states.
In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, shared on the police force’s official account on Tuesday, the IGP commended the commitment displayed by the security personnel, highlighting their role in maintaining law and order, safeguarding the electoral process, and ensuring the safety of citizens.
While noting the seamless electoral process in the three states, the IGP acknowledged the exceptional efforts of the security personnel. However, he expressed concern about pockets of incidents during the elections and directed the Electoral Offences Desk Officers to commence immediate investigations into these issues.
In Kogi State, three officers who were arrested for escorting a VIP contrary to directives were confirmed to be police personnel. Other officers arrested for similar actions will also face disciplinary measures. The IGP expressed gratitude to all security agencies involved in securing the elections and emphasized the importance of adherence to guidelines, rule of law, and standard operating procedures for a more secure democratic institution in Nigeria.
