IGP Orders Probe into Assault on NLC President During Owerri Strike

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the alleged assault on the President of the National Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero. The incident occurred in Owerri, Imo State capital, during a strike led by union members earlier in the week.

A statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, conveyed the IGP’s commitment to uncovering the truth surrounding the assault. The Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department has been instructed to take over the matter, with the primary objective of ascertaining the facts and addressing any conflicting accounts.

“The Nigeria Police Force understands the importance of transparency and accountability in maintaining public trust. The IGP, therefore, assures the public, most especially the leadership of the organised labour, that a thorough and unbiased inquiry will be conducted to provide clarifications,” the statement read.

Given the various versions of the incident, the IGP emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation to clear any ambiguities. The statement reassured the public that the inquiry would be conducted transparently, and appropriate actions would be taken based on the findings.

“The investigation has commenced, and the Nigeria Police Force guarantees that it will be followed to a conclusive end, and appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” the statement concluded.

The assault on Joe Ajaero has raised concerns, and the police’s commitment to a thorough and unbiased inquiry aims to provide clarity on the incident and ensure accountability.
