Ilaje Local Government Takes Action Against Flooding: Clearing Blocked Rivers and Canals

The Ilaje Local Government Area in Ondo State has initiated a vital effort to combat recurring flooding by clearing blocked rivers, canals, drainages, and gullies within the council’s jurisdiction. The drive aims to prevent the devastation witnessed in the wake of a recent heavy rainfall that wreaked havoc in areas like Okitipupa and Igbokoda, causing significant property damage.

Mr. Goke Jatuwase, the Chairman of Ilaje LGA, highlighted the urgency of this exercise in curbing the persistent flooding that has plagued the region. He called upon the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for assistance in aiding affected residents who are grappling with the consequences of the flooding.

To tackle the issue head-on, blocked waterways are being opened up to facilitate proper water flow and reduce erosion risks. Channels such as the Ajere canal and the canal adjacent to the Nigeria Navy Officer’s Mess have been addressed, along with the Oluwa River that has been properly channeled.

Jatuwase also stressed the importance of residents discontinuing the practice of indiscriminate refuse disposal in gullies, drainages, canals, and rivers. This improper waste disposal has been identified as a root cause of the flooding that leads to property destruction.

In addition, the local council is stepping up its efforts to combat improper waste disposal by introducing strict measures and enforcement mechanisms to ensure responsible waste management within the community. Through these actions, the Ilaje Local Government aims to not only mitigate flooding-related hardships but also promote a cleaner and more resilient living environment for its residents.
