The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Imo State, Senator Athan Achonu, expressed deep concern on Saturday, stating that democracy is under attack in the country following the conduct of the governorship election in the state. Achonu decried what he described as a high level of electoral manipulations during the election.
Despite the alleged irregularities, Achonu asserted that the masses were resisting attempts to subvert the will of the people. He highlighted instances where INEC staff reportedly refused to sign or upload results in some places. He claimed that the intervention of security operatives was required in certain areas to facilitate the uploading of results.
Achonu, who is confident in his victory, stated, “We are winning massively on the ground. They have done everything humanly possible to thwart that, but we will not allow that. Imolites will not allow that. I hope INEC is hearing me clearly now. They should declare our results the way they are. They can’t change our results.”
He criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, accusing them of attempting to change the result despite losing the election. Achonu called for the cancellation of areas where irregularities occurred and demanded a rerun to ensure a fair and democratic process.
