Indian Describes Ordeal With ‘Agberos’ in Abuja

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, an Indian, was allegedly assaulted in Abuja by three individuals who were posing as road officials.

According to Mr. Singh, while being driven by his chauffeur in Maitama, three people suddenly appeared and demanded the license plate information of the vehicle.
The men “started demanding money,” he continued, as the light instructed them to move. They stopped our car and began damaging it. The license plate was taken off. One of them sat on the lap of a member of my staff when they unlocked the car door. Before they took the vehicle away from my driver, one of them took me out of the car.

He added that despite showing the same paperwork used to obtain the car in Kano State, their tyres were flattened at the office of the “agberos” and they were once more requested to purchase some tickets.

They insisted that we purchase their products, and they threatened to take away our car dossiers if we didn’t comply.

They demanded that we purchase their own tickets for 365 days at a cost of N200 each, or a total of N73,000, as part of their ongoing extortion.

But afterwards, they agreed to pay N35,000 instead. We were certain it was simply a daylight robbery at that point.

Josephine Ade, the FCT police spokeswoman, was called by our reporter about the event, but she did not pick up the phone or respond to an SMS.
