The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on security agencies to take swift action against those involved in electoral violence. This appeal was made by the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during a meeting of the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
Yakubu stressed that the responsibility for election security primarily lies with the security agencies. He emphasized that the security agencies must decisively address electoral violence and ensure a safe environment for the peaceful conduct of elections. He also called on security personnel involved in election duty to remain neutral and adhere to professional codes of conduct and rules of engagement.
Conducting the upcoming governorship polls in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states poses particular challenges due to insecurity and challenging geographical locations. Yakubu urged politicians to exercise caution and prevent violence, undemocratic activities, and disruptions during the electoral process.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, also indicated that security agencies were making preparations for the governorship elections.
