The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to its staff in preparation for the off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, scheduled for September 21 and November 16, 2024. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized that any corrupt or unethical behavior would result in severe legal consequences during his address at the annual Prof. Abubakar Momoh Memorial Lecture in Abuja.
Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, representing Prof. Yakubu, highlighted the importance of comprehensive training for election personnel to ensure they are well-prepared and professional. The event, organized by The Electoral Institute (TEI), focused on achieving high standards among electoral staff through effective training programs.
Dr. Kole Shettima, director of the MacArthur Foundation and a TEI board member, proposed enhancing the electoral system with strategies including civic education for election officials and establishing direct communication with security forces. He emphasized the need for collective responsibility to protect electoral materials and personnel.
