“Justice James Omotosho Grants N50m Bail to Disgraced ‘Supercop’ Abba Kyari in Assets Non-Declaration Case”

Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari was granted bail by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kyari is facing charges of failure to declare his assets, along with two of his siblings.

In addition to this case, Kyari is also standing trial with four colleagues from the Inspector General Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) over alleged involvement in drug deals.

In the fresh suit labeled FHC/ABJ/CR/408/2022, Kyari and his siblings, Mohammed Baba Kyari and Ali Kyari, were accused of failing to declare their assets at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The trio pleaded not guilty and requested bail to adequately prepare for their trial.

In granting bail to Abba Kyari, the court determined that the charges were bailable and that there was no evidence suggesting he was a flight risk. The judge set the bail amount at N50 million, requiring two sureties of the same amount.

However, the judge clarified that Kyari’s release warrant would only be signed if the pending drug-related trial in another court concluded or if he was granted bail in those cases.

The trial is scheduled to resume on October 18.
