Students at Kaduna State University’s Kafanchan campus in Kaduna State, Nigeria, have threatened to boycott their second-semester examinations if the prolonged power outage at the university is not resolved. The students have been experiencing a lack of electricity supply for over five months, which has disrupted their lectures and preparations for upcoming exams.
The first vice president of the KSU students’ union, Comrade Eli Sajo, delivered a statement to the university’s management during a two-day peaceful protest. Sajo and other student leaders highlighted the challenges the prolonged power outage has caused, including difficulties in studying, threats to personal safety due to darkness, theft, and vandalism.
While the university’s management has provided alternative power sources, the students find these unsustainable and demand the immediate restoration of electricity before October 25. The students organized the protest with placards reading “Bring Back Light to KASU,” “No Light, No Exams,” “Light Up Kafanchan Campus,” and “Restore Our Light.”
In response to the students’ concerns, the KSU Provost of the Kafanchan campus, Prof. Ibrahim Sodangi, assured the students that the university’s management is working to address the power outage and other issues. He acknowledged that the university’s limited funds have affected ongoing projects but praised the students for their peaceful protest and encouraged dialogue to address their grievances.
