The Deeper Life Christian Ministry is buzzing with excitement as Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the church, reveals the man who played a pivotal role in leading him to Christ. The man in question is none other than Pa Elijah Dosunmu, an 83-year-old former official of The Apostolic Faith, who resides in Lagos State.
During a private commemoration of the church’s 50th anniversary, Kumuyi shared the heartwarming story of his encounter with Dosunmu. Kumuyi recounted how Dosunmu’s invitation to The Apostolic Faith marked the beginning of his spiritual journey. In a remarkable turn of events, Kumuyi stipulated that Dosunmu must also attend his church, the Cherubim and Seraphim, where Kumuyi played the drums.
Dosunmu’s response after attending the Cherubim and Seraphim service was simple yet profound – he described it as “active.” This response laid the foundation for their spiritual connection and eventual partnership.
Kumuyi recounted, “He didn’t say, ‘It was bad, calling the name of angels.’ He just said, ‘active.’ He is a good man.”
Dosunmu’s influence extended beyond this initial encounter. He continued to guide Kumuyi, offering support and encouragement. Despite Kumuyi’s initial hesitations about The Apostolic Faith’s quieter services, Dosunmu’s friendship and teachings gradually opened Kumuyi’s eyes to a new path. On April 5, 1964, Kumuyi surrendered his life to the Lord and was born again.
Kumuyi’s admiration and gratitude for Dosunmu are evident in his words: “He was a great encouragement to me; that’s why I said I should call him out and show his face to you that this is the man, the brother, the minister that God used for me.”
Dosunmu’s dedication went beyond guiding Kumuyi’s spiritual growth. When Kumuyi faced excommunication for evangelism, Dosunmu’s unwavering support stood out. He chose to stand by Kumuyi’s side, leaving behind a comfortable position within The Apostolic Faith.
Dosunmu’s impact on Kumuyi extended to their shared love for gospel songs. Kumuyi expressed, “I did not know all of those gospel songs, but now, all the songs that I know, I learned through him.”
The bond between these two individuals led to the founding of the Deeper Life Christian Ministry. Dosunmu was one of the 15 individuals present at the inception of the church. He even served as the first choir master when the church officially began in 1973.
