The leadership crisis within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has taken a new turn as the faction led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has moved to amend the party’s constitution and logo. This decision to amend the constitution was confirmed by the National Auditor of NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, during an exclusive interview.
The move to amend the constitution and logo follows the recent expulsion of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso by the faction of the party under the leadership of Major Agbo. Kwankwaso was expelled for alleged anti-party activities and misappropriation of party campaign funds.
The expulsion of Kwankwaso had caused disunity within the party, with chieftains from different factions trading blame. Subsequently, there were reports of a subtle attempt by the Kwankwaso faction to amend the party’s logo and constitution, potentially weakening the influence of NNPP’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.
While Ladipo Johnson confirmed the move, he denied that it was a direct response to the emergence of a faction within NNPP. He stated that the decision had been discussed within the National Executive Committee (NEC) and was not related to recent factional disputes.
In response, Major Agbo, the acting National Chairman of the faction that expelled Kwankwaso, suggested that the proposed amendments were an attempt to remove the immunity protection afforded to the party’s founder. He claimed that the rush to amend the constitution was a result of this discovery.
The leadership struggle within NNPP appears to be intensifying, with factions taking various actions in pursuit of their interests and control over the party’s direction.
