Labour Leaders Chase Out FIRS Staff With Cane Amid Nationwide Strike

Members of the labour union shut down the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office in Lagos on Monday, enforcing the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) over the proposed minimum wage of ₦60,000 by the Federal Government. In photos circulating online, union members were seen with canes, chasing FIRS staff out of the Agidingbi, Ikeja office.

Workers Shut Nigerian Ports Amid Nationwide Strike

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has also ceased port operations nationwide in line with the NLC and TUC strike directive. An official from the union confirmed that all port installations, including those in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, Onne, and Calabar, have been closed. The ports will remain shut until further notice from the national leadership of organized labor.

National Grid Shutdown as Strike Begins

In addition, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that its workers have deliberately shut down the national power grid. TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, in a statement titled “Grid shutdown: Union Deliberately shuts down the National Grid,” reported that labour unions shut down several transmission substations, leading to a nationwide blackout. The shutdown began at approximately 2:19 AM on June 3, 2024, and TCN is working to recover and stabilize the grid amidst ongoing union activities.
