Labour Party chairman, Abure, others freed

Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has been released from custody. He and several party members were taken into custody on Wednesday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.

According to media reports, Abure and the party’s Edo state chairman, Mr. Kelly Ogbaloi, were taken into custody by a group of police officers and DSS agents.

Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, the LP Youth Leader, who is purportedly devoted to Lamidi Apapa, the party’s factional head, filed a petition that led to the arrest.

The young leader filed a case with the CP, claiming that in December 2023, he was attacked by several party members.

Barely 48 hours before the party’s primary election and the state’s September 21 governor’s race, Abure was forcibly detained.
Reporters learned, nevertheless, that Abure was freed on bond on Wednesday night.

“Let me thank all of you for your solidarity and support,” Abure said in an address to fans on Thursday morning. Since the conclusion of the previous election, we have been involved in multiple battles.

We were setting up for the primaries yesterday when the cops barged in and arrested us for something I won’t get into right now because the inquiry is still ongoing.

“I must clarify, though, that they have kindly released me on bail after multiple interventions.”
