Organised Labour has revised its earlier demand for a new national minimum wage from ₦494,000 to ₦100,000. This adjustment comes as the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage begins a series of daily meetings to reach a consensus. The initial proposal faced significant criticism for being unrealistic.
President Bola Tinubu had tasked the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, with determining the cost implications of the new minimum wage within 48 hours. Union leaders, responding to the backlash against their initial demand, are now advocating for a ₦100,000 minimum wage, although they have not yet formally presented this figure to the committee.
A senior NLC official noted that the first meeting was focused on setting the agenda for the week, without discussing specific wage increases. The Deputy Head of NLC Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, emphasized that the union remains vigilant, with plans to proceed with strike action if satisfactory progress is not made within the week.
