The Lagos State House of Assembly held a public hearing on Wednesday for an electricity bill aimed at ensuring regular and uninterrupted power supply to residents. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, represented by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, emphasized the bill’s importance for the state’s sustainable development. The proposed law would allow the state to license, generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, particularly to unserved and underserved areas.
The bill also seeks to establish a mechanism for electricity planning, promoting off-grid solutions for households and small enterprises. Hon. Sabur Oluwa, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy, noted that the bill would create the Lagos State Electrification Agency and the Lagos State Electrification Fund to manage public works and infrastructure for reliable electricity.
Vincent Umoh, Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Power Engineering, urged the Assembly to ensure technocrats with at least 15 years of experience lead the proposed agency, noting that Lagos needs about 1,000 megawatts for stable electricity supply.
