The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics across the state. The ban, which is effective immediately, was declared by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
Styrofoam, a type of expanded polystyrene foam, is commonly used in the manufacturing of disposable plates, especially in eateries. The decision to implement the ban is a response to the environmental impact caused by single-use plastics, particularly the non-biodegradable nature of Styrofoam.
In the statement released on Sunday, Commissioner Wahab emphasized the need to address the environmental challenges posed by these materials. The ban aims to promote sustainable waste management practices and reduce the negative impact of non-biodegradable plastics on the environment.
This move aligns with global efforts to minimize plastic pollution and promote eco-friendly alternatives. The ban underscores the state government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and waste reduction.
Additionally, Commissioner Wahab had previously called on waste management operators to digitize their operations for improved efficiency. He highlighted the importance of transparency in waste management processes and encouraged operators to implement proper data collation and enumeration of facilities. The commissioner suggested the use of online portals equipped with GPS receivers in waste collection trucks to provide accurate location information.
The combination of banning Styrofoam and single-use plastics, along with the push for digitization in waste management, reflects the state government’s comprehensive approach to addressing environmental challenges and fostering sustainable practices.
