The Divisional Police Officer of the Meiran Police Station in Lagos State has been fired amid allegations of extortion, according to Idowu Owohunwa, the commissioner of police for Lagos State.
An engineer named Ibrahim Saliu previously told reporters that on Saturday, three police officers from the Meiran Police Station in Lagos State extorted N200,000 from him.
Saliu claims that the officers and the station’s DPO warned him and his brother that if they failed to produce receipts for the phones they saw with Saliu’s brother, they would go to jail.
The DPO confiscated the iPhones, peeled off the warranty stickers, and accused my brother and me of stealing and armed robbery, he claimed.
The DPO then gave them the go-ahead to hold us and inform them that we would be imprisoned for theft and armed robbery, which is what I heard next. We started begging, which astonished us.
Saliu revealed that he was requested to pay N500,000 in order to guarantee their release. They agreed to pay N200,000 in cash as instructed by the police.
The state police public relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that the CP Lagos has ordered the immediate removal of the Meiran Police Station DPO in a tweet confirming the occurrence on Wednesday.
“DPO Meiran has been ordered to be immediately fired for showing poor leadership and ineffective management,” wrote Hundeyin.
Meanwhile, the orderly room trial for all of the involved officers has started, and they are currently present at the Command headquarters.
