The Muslim community in Lagos has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the list of commissioner-designates presented by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, citing concerns over Christian dominance. A report from Gatekeepers News indicates that the community is disappointed by the lack of diversity, equity, and fairness in the Governor’s 39-man nominee list, which only includes 8 Muslims. They are urging a review to ensure a more balanced representation, with a call for 60% of the nominees to be Muslims.
In a statement, the community conveyed their gratitude for the electoral victory of Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Kadiri Hamzat. They highlighted their efforts to support the Governor’s return to office, despite facing challenges from opposition fueled by tribal and religious sentiments.
Aligned with their Islamic principles that emphasize fairness, the community expressed concern about the imbalance in the nominee list. They noted that Muslims, constituting over 60% of the state’s population and voting public, are underrepresented, making up less than 20% of the nominees. Out of the 39 nominees, only 8 are Muslims, which the community finds disheartening considering their significant contribution to the state.
The statement reflects the community’s hope for a more inclusive and equitable representation that mirrors the diversity of Lagos’ population.
