Lagos State Government Debunks Rumors of No Arrests by LASTMA

The Lagos State government has denied a report circulating on social media claiming that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to cease arresting erring motorists.

The viral flier, dated Wednesday, stated that Governor Sanwo-Olu warned LASTMA officials to refrain from arresting any commercial or private motorists. It purportedly stated that LASTMA’s primary responsibility is to manage traffic, not make arrests, and that any official who violates this directive will face severe consequences. The flier also provided phone numbers for motorists to call if they faced any issues with LASTMA officials.

In response to these claims, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat, disassociated the governor from the report, branding it as “fake news.”

The Lagos State government has clarified that LASTMA’s role includes managing traffic and enforcing traffic laws as necessary, and the report suggesting otherwise is inaccurate.

More updates will be provided as they become available.
