Misturat Okunbanjo (18) and Azeezat Amoo (16) have been declared deceased in a boat accident that occurred on Thursday in Lagos State’s Ikorodu area.
Four more individuals were also rescued in the incident, which occurred at 8 p.m.
The state Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the tragedy on Friday, saying the passengers were on their way to Isawo from the Olorunsogo section of the village when the boat capsized.
According to a statement issued by the agency’s Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ololade Agboola, a search and rescue effort was launched with the cooperation of locals, leading to the recovery of the remains.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service conducted overnight operations and successfully rescued four female adults while recovering two others in the Isawo community of the Ikorodu area of Lagos,” according to the statement.
“The accident was reported at 8:16 p.m. on Thursday, prompting the agency’s Search and Rescue Crew to be dispatched.” The crew worked with locals who were familiar with the area. Despite the darkness, the search was carried out until late at night, when it was called off. Four of the six people on board the capsized boat on its way from Olorunsogo to Isawo were saved.
“The crew resumed their efforts to continue the search in the early hours of Friday.” Unfortunately, they found the deaths of two women, Misturat Okunbanjo, 18, and Azeezat Amoo, 16. The recovery operation was completed around 10:10 p.m.”
