The dismissal of the European Union (EU) electoral report by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Federal Government has raised concerns within the Transition Monitoring Group. The group, which monitors elections, shares the EU’s concerns and emphasizes the need to address gaps in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Chairman of the election monitoring group, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, stated that the recommendations made by the EU align with the views of local observers and civil society groups. He stressed the importance of reviewing these recommendations and working towards a more transparent, accountable, and participatory electoral system in order to restore confidence in the process.
Rafsanjani further urged President Bola Tinubu to acknowledge the shortcomings in the electoral process, citing ongoing violence, election petitions, and reduced voter participation. Drawing on the example of late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, who admitted gaps in his election and committed to reforming the electoral system, Rafsanjani called on Tinubu to take similar action and initiate effective reforms.
Disregarding the EU’s report, as well as local observers’ findings, may send the wrong message, according to Rafsanjani. He reiterated the TMG’s position that electoral misconduct should not be normalized and stressed the importance of addressing electoral corruption and impunity to enhance the integrity of the electoral process.
In conclusion, Rafsanjani emphasized that the EU’s electoral report, along with local observers’ reports, should not be dismissed. Instead, he urged the government and INEC to thoroughly examine the findings and take necessary actions to ensure free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria.
