LP National Chairman, Julius Abure arrested in Benin

Julius Abure, National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has allegedly been taken into custody by Nigerian Police Force agents in Edo State.

Vanguard claims that Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, the party’s youth leader, filed a petition that resulted in the LP chairman’s detention.

The youth leader filed a petition with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, claiming that in December 2023, he was attacked by certain party members.
The February 13 appeal was sent to the Edo State Command Commissioner of Police.

A portion of the petition said, “I, Comrade Eragbe Anselm, write to you regarding a horrible act of violence committed against me on December 29, 2023, with the utmost urgency and grave concern.”

“I am the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria and a member. The events I am going to relate are critical to justice and the security of those who participate in politics.

As a member of an official delegation consisting of five people and approved by Alhaji Lamidi Basiru Apapa, the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, I arrived at Benin City Airport on December 28, 2023, at approximately 2:00 p.m.

“As required by INEC standards, we were to supervise the sale of nomination forms for various seats and organize Ward, LGA, and State Congresses in Edo State within the designated time frames.

“When I arrived at the Benin Airport, I was greeted by a woman named Mrs. Mary Okheime Newberry, who made up the story that she was offering lodging and transportation on behalf of unidentified “stakeholders.”

“She booked us a room at the Smart Homes Hotel without telling us that she was preparing a horrifying and dark surprise attack.” Pretending to drive us to a meeting location, a man by the name of Austin Emeka arrived the following morning to pick up my colleague, Mr. Patrick Anethua, and me from the hotel lobby.

“Instead, a waiting mob attacked us viciously right outside the hotel gates.”

SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the public relations officer for the Edo State Police, said he had not been informed of the arrest until he was approached.

“As the PPRO of Edo State, I have no knowledge of this,” he declared. I can release it to the public once I have been briefed.

Dr. Yunusa Salisu Tanko, the chief spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 race, too merely replied, “I will get back to you,” when approached.
