In a significant series of operations over the past week, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have made substantial arrests and seizures, targeting drug traffickers across Nigeria.
The most prominent arrest was that of Obiorah Chigozie, a wanted drug kingpin, who had been evading authorities since September 15, 2023. The NDLEA intercepted a consignment of 1.500kg of skunk concealed in flour destined for London, UK. Nworah Adaugo, the freight agent, was arrested during this operation. However, Obiorah attempted to ship another 2.00kg of skunk, concealed in cartons, to the UK on September 28, leading to his arrest. In his confession, Obiorah claimed to have been involved in shoe sales in Lagos before entering the illicit drug trade.
In another operation, NDLEA officers in the Federal Capital Territory intercepted a container truck carrying 1,188 kilograms of skunk hidden beneath cartons of toothpaste. The truck was en route from Lagos to Kano, and the driver, Amafan Fattison, 28, was arrested.
Furthermore, in Bayelsa state, 432 kilograms of skunk were discovered in an abandoned J5 bus along Saipem road, Opolo, Yenagoa, on September 27.
The NDLEA also apprehended a 70-year-old man, Ado Mai Unguwa, with 143.2 kilograms of skunk in Dundee village, Tofa LGA, Kano, on September 30.
In Enugu, 110.6 kilograms of skunk were found in a locked-up shop at Aria new market on the same day.
In Lagos, NDLEA officers stormed the Idi-Oro drug enclave in Mushin on September 30, seizing 212.5 kilograms of cannabis sativa linked to a wanted drug lord.
In Kwara state, 104 kilograms of skunk were recovered from a Toyota Camry car in the Offa area.
Additionally, Chadian national Mohammed Ibrahim, 25, was arrested at the Mafa checkpoint in Borno state on September 25, with 11.8 kilograms of the same substance.
Inter-agency collaboration saw the transfer of four suspects and 1,978 kilograms of cannabis to the NDLEA in Plateau state. In Cross River, 40,000 ampules of pentazocine injection were seized from two suspects – Fajulugbe Adeshola Temitayo, 35, and Nnaorji Agwe Solomon, 54, at Mobil by MCC road, Calabar.
In Kogi state, Ifeanyi Odoh, 25, was arrested with 59,867 pills of opioids, including Tramadol, and 4.03 kilograms of cannabis sativa in the Idah area.
These operations demonstrate the NDLEA’s continued efforts to combat drug trafficking and its commitment to curbing the illegal drug trade in Nigeria.
